In 1882, he lived in New York and then, two years later, in Toronto, where he served as artistic director at a publishing house until 1902. He then settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he served as principal of the Victoria College of Art from 1912 to 1916. He traveled frequently to Europe beginning in 1914 and exhibited regularly in Paris (at the Salon des Indépendants), Brussels, and Canada. A landscape and portrait painter, his body of work consists mainly of watercolors, as well as a few oil paintings created toward the end of his life. His works are held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario, the Edmonton Art Gallery in Alberta, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and the National Gallery of Canada.
