Painted Canvas Depicting A Lively Landscape In The Style Of The “verdure” Tapestries, Early 19th Century

- A painted canvas dating from the early 19th century depicting a landscape enlivened by birds, composed in the style of woven “Verdures.”

- The landscape before us depicts a view that is most likely imaginary, with a foreground filled with colorful flowers and birds with shimmering feathers, one of which is perched on a pillar to the left. Each side is bordered by leafy vegetation whose branches extend outward, like curtains unveiling the scene. The background is equally striking, featuring an architectural structure with a dome and numerous bay windows, resembling a palace. 
- The upper and lower borders serve as a reminder that this type of painting on canvas belongs to a tradition known as “painted tapestries.” These are paintings designed to imitate tapestries created on textile canvases. Originating as an alternative to tapestry, painted canvas shares many common characteristics, such as serving as monumental decor whose large dimensions allow the artist to create a rich and meticulous composition. Here, the canvas can be likened to a “Verdure.”

- An inscription, yet to be deciphered, appears on the reverse.
