Directoire-style Period Parlor With 18th-century Tapestry Depicting Pastoral Scenes And La Fontaine's Fables

A significant set of Directoire-period furniture comprising a sofa and six armchairs made of carved and molded wood, retaining remarkable 18th-century upholstery.

The chairs feature the understated and elegant lines characteristic of the late 18th century: slightly sloping rectangular backs, open armrests, tapered and fluted legs, and discreet carved decoration.

The set is distinguished above all by the richness and variety of its antique tapestries. Each backrest and seat features a different composition, while maintaining perfect decorative unity thanks to the floral garlands, roses, draperies, festoons, and tassels that frame the scenes.

The backrests are adorned with rural and pastoral scenes: children, young figures, small trades, domestic scenes, and rural occupations, rendered in the decorative style of the second half of the 18th century.

The seats feature a rich bestiary comprising, in particular, roosters, cats, foxes, storks, wolves, sheep, dogs, and other animals set within landscapes or narrative scenes. Several of these compositions appear to draw inspiration from La Fontaine’s Fables, particularly those depicting The Fox and the Stork or The Cat, the Rooster, and the Little Mouse.

The tapestries are deliberately decorative, with lively compositions, vivid colors, and a beautiful harmony of greens, pinks, yellows, reds, and cream tones.

The woodwork and tapestries are indeed from the 18th century. The interior upholstery of the seats was reupholstered in the 19th century using a traditional spring-based construction, providing slightly softer comfort while preserving the original tapestries.
