Statue of Saint Barbara in carved and polychromed wood - XVIIᵉ century

Beautiful old religious sculpture depicting Saint Barbara, made of carved and polychromed wood from the XVIIᵉ century. The saint is depicted standing, crowned, dressed in a rich mantle with elegant folds, accompanied by her traditional attribute: the tower, symbol of her martyrdom.

This work displays remarkable sculptural quality, particularly in the treatment of the face, drapery and costume ornamentation. The ancient polychromy, with its red, brown and gold tones, retains a beautiful presence and a particularly decorative authentic patina.

The overall effect is one of austerity and elegance.

The ensemble exudes a sober, powerful character typical of late Renaissance / early Baroque religious statuary. Very fine decorative presence for lovers of sacred art, collectors or characterful interiors.

Saint Barbe: She was a young Christian martyr, probably in the 3rd century. Her popularity stems from her legend, especially from the 9th century onwardsin the Netherlands, Belgium, northern and eastern France. This impressive legend relates that Barbara, a young noblewoman of the nobility, beautiful and wealthy, converted to Christianityagainst the wishes of her father Dioscore. Her father, furious, imprisoned herimprisoned her in a castle tower, but she persevered in her faith.in her faith. Dioscorus set fire to the tower, but found his daughterunharmed. So he had her beheaded! But when the fire died down, lightningfell on him and reduced him to ashes. This is how Saint Barbara came to be invoked against violent death, and became the patron saint of "soldiers who fight against fire".
