An attractive portrait miniature depicting Françoise d’Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon, the secret second wife of King Louis XIV between 1683 and 1715. Although she was never considered Queen, Madame de Maintenon held considerable political influence as one of the King’s closest advisors. This miniature is based on the celebrated portrait by Pierre Mignard.
A few minor scratches and paint losses but otherwise in good condition for the age.
