A bust portrait of a magistrate depicted in three-quarter profile against a dark background. The subject wears a black judicial robe with a white lapel, a characteristic attire of the judiciary during the reign of Louis XIV and in the early 18th century. His long, curly wig—emblematic of the administrative and judicial elites of the time—signifies his social rank and office.

Note: the painting has been re-lined; there is a very small area of missing paint on the cheek (see photo).

The frame is period, made of carved oak and painted, with a few small areas of missing paint.
