Commemorative dagger of the Guard’s Foot Hunters during the Crimean War, Second Empire.
Cast bronze hilt depicting a Guard Foot Hunter, set on a double crossguard adorned with foliage.
Double-edged blade with double fluting.
Cast bronze scabbard richly adorned with military trophies and floral motifs, as well as grotesque masks depicting a battle scene, surmounted by a shield bearing the inscription “Tour Malakoff” and an oval coat of arms bearing the inscription “INKERMANN / SEBASTOPOL / TRAKTIR44, surmounted by a coat of arms bearing the inscription “ALMA.”
This foot soldier is one of four sculptures by Georges Diebolt that once adorned the Alma Bridge in Paris.
The infantrymen of the Guard took part in various battles during the Crimean War.
