Artist: Adrien Barrère
“My goodness, Marianne was so pretty!” (M. Delpech)

Adrien BARRERE (1874–1931) – “Marianne or the Beggar Woman”

Plaster with blue-green, off-white, and red patina, signed in relief on the dress in the lower left corner, circa 1910, a caricature of a destitute, chubby, and shriveled Marianne symbolizing the vices of a Third Republic marred by numerous scandals and chronic ministerial instability.

Height: 35 cm

A few tiny chips here and there; in very good condition; beautiful patina.

“Adrien Baneux, known as Barrère (Paris, 1874–1931), son and grandson of magistrates. Studied law, reluctantly, then turned to humor. Exhibited with the Humoristes. He found relaxation from drawing through humorous modeling and sculpture. Created small posters for the Pathé brothers and numerous posters for films, the Grand Guignol, theater, and café-concerts; illustrated Courteline and sheet music covers. He caricatured the Austro-Germans during the Great War and the prominent figures of his time for the “Têtes de Turcs” column in *Fantasio*. His greatest achievement remains his satirical portraits of professors of medicine and law, which he lithographed himself. An album: “L’album des Poilus,” 1919. Awarded the Legion of Honor. An avid pipe smoker.” (Dico-Solo, ed. Té-Arte, 1996, p. 39)
