Beguinage Furniture, From The Ursuline Convent In Valenciennes
Artist: Ebéniste Nord-flandres
Rare and Interesting Small Beguine House
Typical of Flanders: The Beguines, who formed autonomous communities in buildings
constructed around a tree-lined courtyard, led a life of pious but active penance in workshops and infirmaries.
While they were expected to be modest, they were not required to live in poverty.
The austere furnishings of the Beguinages thus exhibit a quality, simplicity, and rigor that reflect their demanding
form of devotion.
For a comparable example, see *Furniture of the Belgian Provinces and French Flanders*, page 47.
Provenance: Community of the Ursuline Convent in Valenciennes.
Made of oak and dating from the Renaissance period.
Small section of a joint-covering molding is missing, along with a small shelf.
In good condition.
