An exceptional piece of late 19th-century French furniture, this solid walnut sideboard embodies all the richness and fantasy of the Renaissance style. The quality of the carving is remarkable: each panel is adorned with lively bas-reliefs depicting village scenes and figures in period costume, while the side uprights are decorated with finely carved grotesque figures and caryatids. One of the most singular carvings features a jester supporting the upper shelf, adding a theatrical and playful touch to the whole.
The cabinet consists of two parts: an upper part with three finely carved doors and an architectural cornice, a lower part with three richly decorated doors, framed by fluted columns and vegetal details. Handles and keyholes in chased bronze. Warm, even patina. Excellent condition.
