Christoph Ludwig Agricola (1665–1724), Attributed To – Winter, Landscape With A Castle
In this cabinet-sized winter landscape, Christoph Ludwig Agricola moves away from Italian light to return to the style of the great Northern landscape tradition.
A fortified structure with high roofs, reminiscent of a Franco-Walloon castle, overlooks a snow-covered village. A few figures bring life to the paths, while a bridge, streams, and bare trees draw the eye toward the horizon. The sky, tinged with shades of gray, pink, and red, lends the composition a unique atmosphere, at once silent and theatrical.
Even more than through the precision of its details, this work captivates with its character: it evokes Flemish and Dutch winter landscapes, reinterpreted through the personal perspective of a German artist who traveled to the Netherlands, France, England, and Italy.
A work from the artist’s late period, this tempera painting complements *Summer*, which is also offered for sale. Together, the two compositions contrast the North with the South, the cold with the southern light, and the harshness of winter with the abundance of summer.
