Namakdan Gashghaï, Iran, 62 X 43 Cm
Iranian wool namakdan, circa 1940–50. Very good condition. Slight wear on the back. Dimensions: 62 x 43 cm, not including the tassels.
The namakdan, or namek donneh, was used to carry salt. The interior was lined to prevent the salt from coming into contact with the wool. Namakdans can be used as wall hangings.
Beautiful traditional Gashghai namakdan from the Fars region in southwestern Iran. The front features knotted stitches, and the back is made in the kilim style. It features “göl” and zigzag motifs in a series of borders surrounding a pattern of crosses and arrows. It is decorated with tassels and two blue ornaments (one of which is broken).
Over the years, three coins have been added, each depicting a lion holding a scimitar (an Eastern saber with a curved blade) in its paw. This was the emblem of the Shahs of Iran from 1576 to 1979, until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
A few “abraches”: a term referring to variations in shade within the same color.
The Gashghai Confederation comprises various tribes. A few examples: the Kashkulis Bozorgs (the great ones), the Kuchek Kashkulis (the small ones), the Shishbolukis (six districts), the Amalehs or Yalamehs (workers, servants of the Khan).
