Chinese Jadeite Pendant With A Carved Design And A Silver Chain With Two Buttons, 20th Century

A ruyi-shaped good-luck charm in shades of green, white, and pale gray, featuring a double-sided engraved design of lotus flowers. A symbol of good fortune and peace.

The chain ends with two repoussé and chased silver buttons featuring relief depictions of two scenes from Chinese life: on one side, two figures in traditional attire are leaning or busy around a counter or piece of furniture beneath a cloud motif. On the other side, we see two figures, also in traditional attire, seated on either side of a strategy game table beneath a cloud. These scenes are representative of Asian folklore.

The ruyi is a traditional Chinese motif inspired by a ceremonial scepter. It resembles a cloud’s head, a mushroom of immortality (lingzhi), or a stylized heart with ends curving inward. Its name means “as you wish” or “may your wishes come true.”
