Neo-gothic Reliquary Made Of Gilded Bronze, Relic Of Saint Vincent De Paul, 19th Century
A large and elegant neo-Gothic reliquary made of gilded bronze, dating from the 19th century.
Withan architectural form, it features rich Neo-Gothic decoration consisting of openwork trefoil arcades, pinnacles, fleurons, foliage motifs, anda cross at the top, the whole resting on a substantial molded base withfour feet.
The central section, protected by glass, houses a relic of Saint Vincent de Paul, identified by a handwritten cartouche bearing the inscription “St. Vincent de P.”
The relic is delicately placed on a red velvet cushion and surrounded by a remarkable decoration of scrollwork and gilded metal threads forming a radiating pattern around the central piece.
Thereliquary is particularly embellished with polychrome enamel medallions in the champlevé style, decorated with blue crosses and red and gold motifs on a light background. These enameled elements, combined with the delicacy of the gilded bronze decoration, lend the piece great decorative richness.
Theconstruction, the quality of the decoration, and the substantial proportions of this reliquary make it a fine example of 19th-century Neo-Gothic religious art, intended for the solemn display of a relic.
