Large Bronze Kōro With Zodiac Animals, Attributed To Suzuki Masayoshi
A magnificent globular bronze kōro, attributed to Suzuki Masayoshi (1844–?), characterized by a remarkable dark brown patina and finely chased decoration inspired by archaic motifs.
Around the central section runs a broad ornamental band enclosing twelve medallions depicting the animals of the East Asian zodiac, set against a finely incised geometric ground.
The sides are fitted with two elegant handles modelled as small shishi, while the domed cover is surmounted by an imposing karashishi playing with its cub.
The kōro rests on three feet modelled as karashishi, characterized by flowing manes, curled tails, and carefully rendered anatomical details.
Although unsigned, the work can be attributed to Suzuki Masayoshi (1844–?). A nearly identical incense burner bearing the artist’s signature was sold at Bonhams, Japanese Works of Art, 19 March 2013, lot 2380.
