Beautiful Multi Trompe-l'œil Pen-and-ink Drawing, August 28 1865 France, Napoleon III, Framed
Artist: E. Marchand
Executed with great finesse in pen, here is a beautiful trompe l'œil drawing. The background—a first trompe l'œil depicting a faux wood wall—features several scraps of paper. A sheet of music for “Le Petit Grenadier,” a fragment of “Le Petit Journal,” a drawing of a horseman, a business card (“A. Marchand, fashions and lingerie, 19 Rue du Pain”), a tiny satirical drawing of a soldier, and two other more classical drawings on the right. The trompe l’œil effect of the overlapping sheets is very well executed.
Handwritten note at the bottom of the drawing: “Drawn in pen on August 28, 1865, (signed) E. Marchand.”
Period frame with a stained wooden moldings and original blown glass. The backing board has been reinforced more recently.
Excellent condition. No breaks or defects… though I do note a few micro-tears in the upper portion, none of which are serious!
French or Francophone working, dating from the Napoleon III period, 1865.
Dimensions:
Frame: 37 cm x 29.5 cm
Image: 32.5 cm x 25 cm.
