Khorjin Rug. Kurdish Jaff. Circa 1900. 105 X 67 Cm
There are some color palettes that one rarely encounters.
This one is undoubtedly one of them. With its diversity, the subtlety of its contrasts, and the surprising harmony of its colors, it creates a combination that is both rare and unique.
Indigo and midnight blue, petrol blue, weathered madder reds, brick, coral, dusty rose, browns, ochres, muted greens, yellows, and touches of ivory: the hues are numerous, yet none seeks to dominate the others.
Time has taken its toll. It has softened the hues, mellowed the contrasts, and bestowed upon the piece a patina that only an antique can acquire. Far from diminishing the palette, it seems, on the contrary, to have brought it into harmony. The colors complement, balance, and respond to one another with astonishing precision.
Woven and knotted using traditional techniques—wool upon wool—this piece is made of remarkably high-quality wool that is soft and almost silky. This material beautifully catches the light and allows the plant-based dyes to fully express their nuances and depth.
This piece was originally the knotted side of a khorjin, a bag used by nomadic peoples. Its field is constructed around a succession of geometric diamond shapes, repeated according to the same principle but continually reinvented through design and color. The repetition provides the rhythm; the variations bring it to life.
This design is characteristic of Kurdish Jaff textiles. Historically settled in the mountainous regions of the Zagros, between western Persia and Iraqi Kurdistan, the Jaff are particularly renowned for their khorjins featuring crocheted diamond motifs.
Precious for its material, fascinating for its design, and deeply alluring for the patina of its hues, this piece is a true work of textile art—antique, rare, and decidedly decorative.
