Alabaster Sculptural Group Depicting Two Winged Cupids Late 19th – Early 20th Century
“ “La Confidence”
Alabaster sculptural group depicting two winged cupids
Late 19th – early 20th century
A charming alabaster group depicting two winged cupids seated side by side on a naturalistic mound.
One of the cupids leans toward his companion, tenderly wraps an arm around him, and appears to be whispering a secret in his ear. The close proximity of the two figures, the gentleness of their expressions, and the delicacy of their gestures lend the composition an intimate and poetic quality.
The sculpture stands out for the finesse of its modeling, the supple rendering of the hair, the precision of the hands and feet, and the delicate work on the wings. One of the figures is partially draped in a cloth tied at the back with an elegant ribbon.
The group rests on a molded oval base, topped by a rocky mound adorned with plant motifs. The alabaster, with its ivory and honey tones, exhibits a beautiful translucency that highlights the softness of the forms.
Italian work from the late 19th or early 20th century.
