Victor Hugo – Complete Works In 19 Volumes – 19th-century Illustrated Edition
A significant collection of Victor Hugo’s Complete Works in 19 volumes, published in Paris by E. Girard & A. Boitte, in a beautiful illustrated edition from the late 19th century, generally dated to around 1880–1890. The bibliographic copies found confirm this 19-volume edition by these publishers.
The set is presented in an elegant, uniform binding in red half-shagreen, with the covers lined with red percaline. The ribbed spines are richly adorned with gilded panels featuring a small-iron motif, with titles, volume numbers, and the titles of the works embossed in gold. The initials “B. R.” also appear in gold letters at the bottom of each spine.
This collection brings together Victor Hugo’s major works of fiction, poetry, drama, and political writing, including *Notre-Dame de Paris*, *Les Misérables*, *Les Travailleurs de la mer*, *L’Homme qui rit*, *Quatrevingt-Treize*, *Han d’Islande*, *Bug-Jargal*, *Le Rhin*, *Les Châtiments*, *L’Année terrible*, and *La Légende des siècles*, as well as numerous historical, political, and literary texts.
The edition is richly illustrated in black, both within the text and through numerous full-page illustrations. *Notre-Dame de Paris* opens with a remarkable architectural frontispiece dated MDCCCLXXXII (1882), followed by numerous illustrations, headpieces, initials, and engraved compositions.
The set forms a particularly decorative collection thanks to the uniformity and richness of its bindings.
Condition: good overall condition for this late 19th-century set. Bindings are sturdy and uniform, with gilding still well-preserved. Some scuffing and signs of wear on the caps and corners. The interiors show foxing spots of varying intensity depending on the volume, visible particularly on certain introductory pages and plates—a common flaw in this type of 19th-century edition and paper. See photographs.
A beautiful, complete, uniform, and highly decorative set of the works of Victor Hugo, bringing together in 19 volumes the essence of the work of one of the most important French writers of the 19th century.
