Ivory Miniature: Portrait Of A French Citizen From The Revolutionary Era, Dated 1798

A rare gouache miniature on ivory depicting a French citizen in Revolutionary-era attire, painted in Rome in 1798 during the Directory.
The subject is depicted in bust view, wearing a wide black bicorne hat adorned with a tricolor cockade, dressed in a blue coat with a red collar and lapels, complemented by a light-colored vest and a white cravat. A decoration or medal is visible on his chest.
The miniature is preserved in its oval gilded metal case, featuring a ring at the top reminiscent of the settings used for watches or portable mementos from the late 18th century.
On the reverse, a handwritten inscription framed by a border of painted flowers and foliage reads, in part:
Made in Rome on 20 Floréal, Year 6 of the French Republic—Citizen Krebs, painted 1798.
The 20th of Floréal, Year VI, corresponds to May 9, 1798, which precisely places the work in the final years of the French Revolution, at the beginning of the Directory period.

Dimensions of the miniature alone: 5.2 cm long by 4.2 cm wide.
