A student of Pierre Révoil and Fleury-Richard at the École des Beaux-Arts at the Palais Saint-Pierre in Lyon, beginning in 1810, Antoine Duclaux (1783–1868) is a painter who has received little attention in art history, yet was rightly admired in his time for his landscapes and depictions of animals.
Undoubtedly sketched in the Lyon countryside—a constant source of inspiration for this artist, who was emblematic of the region— this shed, or hut, used to store the tools of a shepherd or farmer, was a favorite subject for this painter, draughtsman, and engraver, who loved to depict the customs and daily life of the people of Lyon during the first half of the 19th century. Among the works he submitted to the Salon, several of his paintings depict the interiors of farms, barns, or inns.
Between 1830 and 1850, Duclaux frequently worked in the area around the village of Vourles, where he owned a country house. It was perhaps in these landscapes that he found, one day while out walking, the subject of this drawing.
A makeshift shelter, this shed—as poetic as it is practical—inspired Duclaux to create a drawing rich in detail, executed with meticulous technique using black chalk and highlights of white chalk, which gives the work a striking presence.
In Duclaux’s rendering, this subject seems timeless and could easily have appeared in the sketchbooks of various artists from centuries past. In particular, it echoes the poetry of the drawings and etchings of the Dutch Golden Age, evoking both the Van Ostade brothers and Pieter de Molijn. In 18th-century France, one might think of Jean-Pierre Houël and, closer to Duclaux, the Lyon-based Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, or even Georges Michel.
The drawing is well-preserved overall, on blue-gray paper that has retained its freshness and allows one to appreciate the intensity of the contrasts with which Duclaux liked to work when drawing from life in this manner.
