Empire-style ceremonial console table in flamed mahogany veneer
This large console table (1.14 m long) rests on a solid, serrated base. The square-section legs lend the console a sense of understated elegance, thereby highlighting the finely carved caryatids, which are accented with a bronze-effect “medal” patina. The console has no drawer along its base. It is topped with Turquin blue marble.
It is comparable to the work of cabinetmaker Jacob Desmalter (1803–1813). A console table stamped by this master cabinetmaker is preserved in the collections of the Mobilier National under inventory number GLE 123 and exhibits the same characteristics: a serrated base and square-section legs.
