A French painter born in Niort in 1899, Raymond Besse arrived in Paris in 1916 and began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1923. Deeply attached to working-class Paris, he devoted a significant portion of his work to the northern neighborhoods of the capital, notably Montmartre, Saint-Ouen, Clichy, and Aubervilliers. He favored winter scenes and snowy atmospheres, which give his compositions a tone that is both realistic and poetic.
