19th-Century Giltwood and Gesso “Barbizon” Frame with Laurel Garland and Acanthus Leaves, Louis XVI Style, Rebate 41.5 x 33.5 cm, 6F Format

19th-century giltwood and gesso frame known as a “Barbizon” frame, with a broad profile and rich ornamental decoration — laurel garland tied with crossed ribbons, acanthus leaves and beaded mouldings — lavishly drawing on the Neoclassical vocabulary of the Louis XVI style. The moulding is eleven centimetres deep and surrounds an opening suitable for a standard 6F canvas, its generous proportions typical of fine-quality frames intended for important paintings, giving the piece a substantial and stately appearance. It retains the characteristic interplay of matte and burnished surfaces found in antique gilding, with the red bole showing through in places where the surface has naturally worn. The frame may accommodate a canvas or be fitted with a mirror. It can be displayed either vertically or horizontally.

Rectangular empty giltwood and gesso frame. French work from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1890, in the Neoclassical / Louis XVI taste then particularly fashionable among landscape painters. The frame historically contained a painting by Léon Richet (1847–1907), a pupil of Narcisse Díaz de la Peña and a representative of the second generation of the Barbizon School.

Solid wood construction, with the rear assembly firmly reinforced by wooden battens and diagonal braces nailed at the corners. The structure is sound and rigid and has been treated against wood-boring insects. Two screw eyes remain in place along the upper section: the frame is ready to hang.

The decoration is arranged in several successive ornamental registers. The outer edge is highlighted by a twisted / ribbon-pattern moulding. A broad convex peripheral frieze is decorated with a wreath of laurel leaves, punctuated at the centre by crossed ribbons. A large, smooth central hollow moulding slopes inward towards the opening; its burnished surface provides visual breathing space between the ornamental bands and enhances the painting. The inner border consists of a double frieze comprising a row of beads followed by an egg-and-dart / heart-ray motif.

Gilding over red bole, alternating between burnished and matte areas. The bole is visible through areas of wear, giving the whole frame a warm, copper-toned patina.

Very attractive overall appearance and ready for display in its present condition, with no prior restoration required.

Please note one nail hole on the flat inner section of giltwood. The gilding shows minor period touch-ups, a few small losses and some previously regilded areas. These alterations are consistent with the natural ageing and wear of antique gesso and do not detract from the overall legibility of the ornamentation. No immediate intervention is required, although localised gesso and gilding restoration could of course be undertaken at the purchaser’s discretion. Antique gesso decoration is inherently fragile and the frame must therefore be handled with great care to avoid chipping.

The 41.5 x 33.5 cm rebate accommodates a standard 6F canvas measuring 41 x 33 cm without alteration. The frame is sold empty, without canvas or glass; it may equally be used for a painting, a work on paper with a mount, or fitted with a silvered mirror.
