Relic Of St. Jeanne De Chantal – Wooden Cross From Her Reliquary – 18th Century, Annecy, Reliquary
An exceptional and rare relic of Blessed Jeanne-Françoise de Chantal (1572–1641), co-founder, with Saint Francis de Sales, of the Order of the Visitation.
This precious relic takes the form of a small wooden cross, 4 cm high, carved from the wood of her funeral reliquary. The cross bears the authentic inscription: “Chasse B M de Chantal”, meaning “Shrine of Blessed Mother de Chantal.”
This inscription allows for a particularly precise dating. Jeanne de Chantal was beatified in 1751 and bore the title of Blessed until her canonization in 1767. This relic must therefore have been created during that period. Furthermore, it was most likely crafted shortly after her beatification, following the opening of her tomb in 1752, when the wood from her reliquary was used to create relics intended for the devotion of the faithful.
The relic is preserved along with its original ecclesiastical certification. On the reverse side, an intact red wax seal remains, depicting the two crossed keys of Saint Peter surmounted by his bust. This seal is likely that of the Chapter of Saint-Pierre d’Annecy or the former Diocese of Geneva-Annecy, guaranteeing the authenticity and integrity of the relic.
This is a remarkable testament to 18th-century devotion to one of the great figures of French spirituality, whose provenance, authenticity, and date of manufacture are exceptionally well established.
Dimensions: Height of the cross: 4 cm.
An ancient, authenticated relic, rare on the market, and of great historical, religious, and collectible interest.
