Rare Pair Of Loafers Decorated With Porcupine Quills

A rare pair of antique moccasins made of supple leather, notable for the particularly archaic nature of their construction and their extensive decoration with porcupine quills.

The upper of each moccasin is adorned with a large, radiating circular rosette, composed entirely of flattened, dyed porcupine quills skillfully assembled. Arranged in concentric geometric sectors within a deliberately limited palette of natural, yellow, and dark tones, this striking circular decoration is fully in keeping with the ancient tradition of North American quillwork.

The construction is particularly interesting. Large, archaic-shaped triangular flaps, left almost entirely unadorned, frame the upper and give the shoe an extremely minimalist silhouette. They contrast with the exceptional sophistication of the quillwork concentrated on the two large medallions.

The interior retains a substantial fur lining, attesting to the functional purpose of these moccasins and their adaptation to a cold environment.

The piece as a whole displays a particularly convincing aged patina as well as signs of actual use.

The simplicity of the construction, the prominence of the geometric quillwork, the absence of beaded decoration, and the very distinctive shape of the large triangular flaps suggest an early date, in the first decades of the 19th century, with possible parallels to productions from the northern regions, the Cree, and the Great Lakes.

Condition: original condition with wear and tear consistent with the age and use of the pair. There are gaps in the spike decoration, particularly visible on one of the two medallions. There are perforations and wear on the soles. These imperfections in no way detract from the ethnographic character and remarkable presence of the set.
