Orientalist Portrait

A beautiful and significant gouache watercolor by Alphonse Birck (1859–1942),
depicting a young Oriental woman seated, holding a piece of fruit in her left hand, with a basket filled with fruit resting on her lap.

The young woman, richly adorned with necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, wears a flowing headdress in shades of turquoise, pink, and ochre. Alphonse Birck renders the model’s face, the fabrics, and the jewelry with great finesse, using the soft, luminous palette characteristic of his Orientalist compositions.
