An Italian Pair Of Armchairs In Carved And Lacquered. Francesco Bolgiè?, Turin, 18th Century

Description

A refined example of 18th-century Piedmontese craftsmanship, attributable to the Turin school and ascribed to Francesco Bolgiè on account of the sophistication of its construction and the exceptional attention devoted to carving and ornamentation. Crafted from finely carved wood, the armchairs are lacquered and gilded, featuring a rich yet harmonious decorative scheme characteristic of the Late Baroque, while already anticipating the emerging Rococo taste. The structure is both robust and elegant: the truncated pyramidal legs, carved with foliate motifs and joined by a finely worked seat rail, support a broad and comfortable seat. The high, gently shaped backrest is surmounted by an elaborate gilt cresting of scrolling foliage and cartouches, while the centre of the back rail is carved with a motif identifiable as the coat of arms of the House of Savoy.
