Paul SORMANI (1817–1877) was an Italian-born cabinetmaker based in Paris, known for his Louis XV- and Louis XVI-style furniture. He opened his first workshop in 1847 at 7 Cimetière Saint-Nicolas, then moved in 1854 to 114 Rue du Temple, and finally in 1867 to 10 Rue Charlot. His creations were highly successful, particularly with Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, who chose his furniture to furnish her residences. His work, admired by the Parisian bourgeoisie, is distinguished by meticulous marquetry and finely chiseled, gilded bronze ornamentation. This rosewood desk reflects the full extent of his craftsmanship, featuring high-quality finishes and a design faithful to the styles of the era.
