Empire-period Mahogany Pillar Clock With Sphinxes, Signed Bailly.

Retour d'Égypte" style mantel clock featuring Cuban flame mahogany veneer over an oak carcass. It rests on four flattened ball feet. Two gilt-bronze sphinxes, set upon the base, support the clock housing that contains the movement.

The white enamel dial is signed "Bailly à Paris," and the blued steel hands are of the "Breguet" style.

The movement strikes the hours and half-hours and retains its original silk-thread suspension.

Condition report: The clock is in excellent condition, retaining its original mercury gilding and veneer. There is a minute veneer restoration measuring 2 centimeters (see the boxed area in the photo). The lighter-colored veneer section in one corner is original; it is sapwood, not a repair. The clock is in working order. The cabinetwork features a wax-filled finish. Bailly: A renowned clockmaker from the first half of the 19th century, hailing from a dynasty of clockmakers. Celebrated for the quality of his work, he became clockmaker to Their Imperial and Royal Majesties. As a supplier to the Imperial *Garde-Meuble* (Furniture Repository), he was responsible for maintaining the clocks at Compiègne and the Trianons (source: *Les Ouvriers du Temps* by Jean D. Augarde). Many clocks created by the era's greatest bronze-makers bear his signature.
