“Refugium agonizantium,” A foreshadowing of Jesus’ death—a rare depiction of Joseph, protector of the dying and of the Family, leaning over the Infant Jesus and adorned with a cartouche of floral garlands.
The painting features a large number of flowers, such as roses and wild roses. Early Christians associated the wild rose with Christ’s crown of thorns, with its five petals symbolizing the five sufferings; generally, the flower came to symbolize Mary’s chastity and the Immaculate Conception.

The painting is on display at our gallery in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (France) on weekends.
