A very beautiful portrait of a nobleman in a landscape – 19th-century Northern European school, based on portraits created around 1620–1630

In Northern Europe, the so-called “confusion” ruff was very fashionable in the 1620s and 1630s.

The “à confusion” ruff is an unstarched ruff with multiple tiers, significantly less rigid, falling over the shoulders as a ruffled collar, then forming large folded collars, and finally ending in a folded collar edged with lace (Louis XIII style).
