Prestigious Men's Jewelry Set (loop Necklace) From The Nez Perce (nimiipuu)

A rare and prestigious men’s necklace set belonging to the tradition of Loop Necklaces of the Nez Percé (Nimiipuu), a people of the Columbia Plateau whose large shell necklaces are among the most iconic creations of Plains art.

The necklace consists of ten rows of shell discs (hair pipes), each interrupted at its center by an antique glass bead. The rows, which gradually increase in length, are suspended from two vertical leather posts, creating a composition of remarkable harmony.

The posts are adorned with twelve iron bells suspended from thin leather straps, as well as two large circular shell discs, finely decorated with double concentric rows of blackened dots. The last row features several polychrome glass beads, likely of Venetian origin, evoking the trade between Indigenous peoples and European merchants in the late 19th century.

Given its size and elegance, this set was intended to be worn over a ceremonial shirt during gatherings, dances, or other important occasions. The balance of its construction, the quality of its materials, and the perfect symmetry of its ten rows attest to the care taken in its creation.

The set is preserved in excellent condition, with a uniform antique patina, a cohesive assembly, and original materials.
