Nymphs Leda And The Swan: An Antique Engraving By Desnoyers, After Guillon Lérhière Etching

Artist: Guillaume Guillon Léthire

Nymphs at the Bath, or Leda and the Swan

19th-century engraving, drawn by Auguste Desnoyers and engraved under his direction by C. F. Noël and Massol, after a painting by Guillaume Guillon-Lethière (1760, Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe – 1832, Paris), exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1830.

Guillaume Guillon-Lethière was the son of a mixed-race enslaved woman from the island of Guadeloupe and a planter and King's Prosecutor in Guadeloupe, who acknowledged him in Paris in 1799. He became a prominent advocate of Neoclassicism early in his career.

This engraving is approximately 200 years old. It is in good condition considering its age. Our restorer carefully cleaned the engraving to remove traces of aging and accumulated dirt.

The engraving had several tears in the white margins, which did not affect the image itself. These tears have been carefully restored. The restorations remain discreet and, once the engraving is mounted with a mat and framed, they will become virtually imperceptible.

We invite you to examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and condition report of this engraving.
