​A beautiful, large pastel from the Belle Époque period, executed with remarkable mastery of light and the depiction of vegetation.

​The work depicts an elegant young woman outdoors, wearing a light-colored pleated blouse and her hair pulled back into a high bun, busy in a lush garden near a bed of blooming roses. The rendering of the skin tones, the ethereal quality of the blue sky, and the freshness of the colors are perfectly representative of the naturalistic and romantic tastes of the turn of the century, circa 1900
​The work is signed “J. ESQUIROL” in the lower right corner and dated October 3, 1904
​The pastel is preserved in its original oval gilded wooden frame, richly molded with gadrooned and beaded motifs, protected under its original glass with its original mounting and sealing on the back.
