A beautiful oil on canvas by Bernard Conte depicting shore fishermen on a vast beach exposed by the receding tide.

The work is signed “Bernard Conte” in the lower right corner. The back of the stretcher frame bears the handwritten title “Les Pêcheurs à marée basse,” as well as the size designation “3 F,” a former inventory number, and a label from the framer DELF, Cadres d’Art.

The scene takes place on a foreshore largely exposed by the tide. In the foreground, a female fisherwoman, seated or crouching and seen from behind, wears a yellow outfit accented with green and a blue headdress. Her silhouette serves as the composition’s main focal point. Further away, several figures are scattered among the puddles, sandbars, and rocks, busy gathering shellfish and crustaceans.

The sea appears in the upper portion as horizontal bands of blue-green. A few colorful sails stand out against the horizon, bringing life to this calm stretch of sea. The pearly gray sky, stretching far and wide, envelops the scene in a diffused light characteristic of the Atlantic coast.

Bernard Conte constructs his landscape through a succession of horizontal planes: the light, damp sand in the foreground; the beach with its brown and mauve hues; the dark line of rocks; the sea; and finally the sky. This arrangement gives the composition great depth despite the small size of the canvas.

The figures are arranged along a diagonal line extending from the fisherwoman in the foreground to the distant silhouettes, and then to the sails on the horizon. This path naturally guides the viewer’s gaze toward the sea. The fishermen, appearing small against the expanse of the beach, emphasize the vastness of the landscape and the quiet nature of the scene.

The color palette combines bluish grays, turquoise blues, muted greens, browns, taupes, and whites. The yellow, green, and blue accents in the clothing introduce splashes of color into this deliberately subdued atmosphere. The yellow of the central figure echoes that of a distant sail, creating a connection between the foreground and the horizon.

The painting alternates between fluid brushstrokes and impasto. The sky is rendered with broad applications of paint that reveal the canvas’s weave. The sand and puddles are suggested by repeated strokes, smudges, and horizontal brushstrokes. The rocks, figures, and sails are rendered with thicker paint, sometimes applied with a palette knife.

Faces and anatomical details are not depicted with precision. The artist focuses on poses, silhouettes, and color relationships. Just a few brushstrokes are enough to evoke the fishermen’s clothing, baskets, and gestures. This economy of means gives the work a great sense of freshness and makes it immediately accessible.
