Nineteenth-century watercolor scene of armed brigands romantic Italy 20 x 16 cm

Beautiful early nineteenth-century watercolor depicting two popular armed figures, in a highly evocative romantic and picturesque spirit. The scene shows two men in southern costume, one seated on a rock in a resting attitude, the other standing alert, each armed with a long firearm that may evoke blunderbusses or flared-barrel rifles. This detail strongly reinforces the character of brigands, smugglers or guerillas, typical of the romantic imagination of the 19th century.

The subject also seduces by its very intelligent treatment of the sheet: the artist uses the natural color of the paper as the background of the work, leaving large blank reserves that literally make the characters stand out. This economy of means gives great presence to the motif, concentrating the eye on the figures and their attitudes, and giving the whole a great visual freshness. The blues of the clothes, the browns of the hats and rocks, the whites of the gaiters and shirts stand out with finesse against this background left bare, almost luminous.

The whole is probably from a 19th-century European school, in a French, Italian or Hispanic vein, circa 1830-1850. Here we find the taste for studies of popular types, scenes of southern brigands and picturesque costumes dear to the Romantic period. The composition, sober and highly legible, emphasizes the silhouettes, expressions and contrasting attitudes of the two figures.

Technique: watercolor on paper.
Era: 19th century.
Subject: scene of brigands or armed folk types.
Dimensions: 20 x 16 cm.

Ancient condition to report: minor soiling, foxing or marginal stains, edges with wear and minor irregularities, some visible minor creasing or accidents, but very nice overall presentation. The charm of the leaf remains intact.
