Imperial gold bricks are among the most beautiful architectural ceramics ever produced in China. They were reserved exclusively for the country’s most prestigious imperial buildings, such as the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Temple of Heaven, and other major palace complexes. Their name does not refer to gold, but to their extraordinary quality and value.

The manufacturing process was extremely demanding. Each brick required about two years of work. The fine clay was refined several times before being slowly fired using three different types of wood, allowing for precise control of the kiln temperature throughout the process. The bricks were then cooled and dried slowly for about 120 to 130 days, resulting in a ceramic of exceptional density and durability.

One of the essential characteristics of an authentic Imperial Gold Brick is the clear, crystalline metallic sound it produces when tapped lightly, attesting to its exceptional density and quality. The brick retains its original Chinese firing marks, further underscoring its historical significance.

The centuries-old craft of making imperial gold bricks nearly disappeared after the fall of Imperial China and was revived in the 1980s to support the restoration of the Forbidden City, thereby preserving one of China’s most remarkable traditional crafts.
