Early 18th-century Dutch Colonial-style Chest Made Of Solid Amboina Wood, Batavi

A rare and highly sought-after collector’s cabinet from the Dutch colonial era, crafted in Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) in the early 18th century. Crafted with exceptional skill from solid amboyna wood—one of the most precious exotic woods of the Dutch East Indies—this box features magnificent natural grain and a rich, warm patina, the result of more than three centuries of history.

It retains its original white metal hardware, including the corner brackets, handles, and escutcheon, all adorned with a beautiful antique patina. The interior retains its original red lacquer, offering a striking contrast to the grain of the Amboina wood.

The lock and key are later replacements, installed over the course of the box’s long history. Such replacements are common on antique boxes that have seen regular use and in no way diminish the piece’s decorative or historical value.
