This Fang Benga statue (from Central Africa, mainly from Gabon and Equatorial Guinea) stands out for its traditional stylistic and iconographic features.
Morphological and Stylistic Description
Posture and attitude:
The figure is depicted standing in a flexed or squatting position (folded legs), a classic posture of Bieri reliquary sculptures among the Fang.
The hands are joined in front of the torso and hold a tubular or conical object (often interpreted as a cornet, ritual cut or receptacle).
The statue has a attachment rod under the base (or an extension of the body), originally designed to be displayed on the lid of the reliquary box containing the bones of the ancestors.
Head and face:
The hairstyle is in the shape of a prominent helmet, shared by a marked central sagittal crest.
The edge of the hairdresser is decorated with a row of nails or metal pellets (lettusk/copper) running along the temple line and the occiput. A metal plate is also inserted on the top of the skull.
The eyes are inlaid with small, bright metallic elements, giving the gaze a piercing and protective intensity, typical of the watchful function of reliquary statues.
The face has expressive features: a broad nose with well-designed nostrils and an open mouth with a half-open mouth, showing carved teeth.
Ornaments and ornaments:
The neck is surrounded by a necklace of dark, bluish tubular pearls.
The body has an ancient, warm and lustrous patina, reflecting the ritual use, manipulations and traditional palm oil anointings. Metal plates are also observed embedded in the shape of rafters or bands on the top of the chest.
Anatomy:
The anatomical model highlights the muscles of the arms and shoulders.
The navel is represented in relief in the form of a prominent round pellet.
The back reveals a marked spine and plump buttocks above the mounting support.
