Maurice Mareels (1893–1976): “chapel Of Our Lady Of Joy In Penmarch,” Oil On Canvas
Maurice Mareels was born in Saint-Gilles (Brussels) on February 9, 1893.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1911 to 1914. On October 22, 1914, he was wounded during the Battle of the Yser. For the remainder of the war, he was assigned to administrative duties within the army in Calais. After the war, he resumed his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels until 1919. He was appointed professor of drawing at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Ixelles. He was particularly interested in the landscapes of the Campine region (northern Belgium) and Brittany. He also painted still lifes and portraits.
He died on October 14, 1976, in Uccle (Belgium)
