Vase Signed François-eugène Rousseau & Ernest-baptiste Léveillé, Japanese-style Glass, Paris

A rare and very elegant French glass vase in the Japanese style, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1875–1885, signed and associated with the significant artistic collaboration between François-Eugène Rousseau (1827–1891) and Ernest-Baptiste Léveillé (1841–1913).

The elegantly shaped vase is crafted from colorless translucent glass, adorned with a remarkable upper section of turquoise-blue glass and distinctive irregular applications of blue glass in the shape of “teardrops” or droplets, cascading down the body of the vase.

The surface is also adorned with a delicate engraved design inspired by Japanese art, featuring plant motifs. The contrast between the transparency of the glass, the blue glass inlays, and the delicacy of the engraved design lends this piece a particularly refined and original character.

The vase bears a signature referring to François-Eugène Rousseau and Ernest-Baptiste Léveillé. The signature, which notably includes the large, characteristic “L” associated with Léveillé, has been examined and authenticated by an expert as referring to both artists.

François-Eugène Rousseau was one of the great pioneers and innovators of French artistic glassmaking in the second half of the 19th century. Ernest-Baptiste Léveillé, his assistant and collaborator, was closely involved in the development of the innovative, Japanese-inspired glasswork associated with Rousseau and subsequently became an important figure in French artistic glassmaking himself.

The combination of translucent glass, “teardrop”-shaped blue glass inlays, finely engraved floral decoration, and the authenticated signature referencing Rousseau and Léveillé makes this vase a particularly interesting and sought-after example of Japanese-inspired French glassware.

The vase is in excellent original condition, with no chips, cracks, or visible restoration. The glass has retained its original surface, colors, and beautiful patina.

A rare and highly decorative piece, of particular interest to collectors of François-Eugène Rousseau, Ernest-Baptiste Léveillé, Japonism, 19th-century French artistic glassware, and early Art Nouveau.
