St. Joseph - 18th-century Ancient Polychrome Terracotta Sculpture
A beautiful antique terracotta sculpture depicting SaintJoseph, an excellent example of the great sculptural tradition of the18th-century Bolognese School. The saint, modeled in the round, gazesgently upward. The facial features express aprofound spiritual intensity. The right hand is raised with emphasis and devotionto the chest, while the right arm encircles a book (a symbol of the Holy Scriptures)and holds back a broad drape of fabric. The quality of the modeling is also evident in theextraordinary rendering of the garments: the ample folds of the tunic and cloakare typical of the Emilian sculptors active between the 17th and18th centuries (the circle of great artists such as Giuseppe Maria Mazza or AngeloGabriello Piò). The sculpture is in excellent overall condition.
