Emile Bernard. The Martyr, Drawing From The Pont-aven Period, 1892.
Artist: Emile Bernard ( 1868-1941).
Our drawing depicts Christ with an androgynous appearance. It dates from the artist's most celebrated period—the Pont-Aven years. The following year, Émile Bernard left Pont-Aven to travel across Europe after a falling-out with Gauguin. The drawing is signed and dated; the verso bears a certificate from the artist's son, Michel-Ange Bernard, the studio stamp, and exhibition references. (Housed in a gold-leaf frame with UV-protective glass; 45.5 cm x 65.5 cm).
