Artist: -
Tempera on wood panel with embossed and chiseled silver mounting (riza/oklad)
A splendid early 19th-century Russian icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, shown in full face, blessing with his right hand and holding the Gospel in his left; on either side, within medallions, appear Christ and the Virgin Mary, in accordance with Orthodox iconographic tradition.
The work is embellished with a chiseled silver riza (oklad), featuring a radiant halo and exquisite decorations with floral and geometric motifs. The hallmarks on the edge attest to the authenticity and period of manufacture: silver fineness of 84 zolotniki (875/1000), the silversmith’s hallmark with the initials I.B. and the date 1810, as well as the imperial hallmark with the control head.
