Signed Miniature Portrait By Valentin-louis Doutreleau, 1834, 19th Century

A rare and very beautiful portrait of Madame Thérèse Boutilfieie, painted on November 22, 1834, when she was 29 years old. Inscribed in ink on the back.

Signed and dated by Valentin-Louis Doutreleau (1814–1872).

Very fine quality of execution.

First half of the 19th century, Louis-Philippe era.

Valentin Louis Doutreleau:

A student of Paul Delaroche. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1837. He made his debut at the Salon in 1835 and exhibited there regularly until 1870.

In 1848, he was present at Chateaubriand’s funeral and produced a large-format painting of the event, which was lost during the bombing of Saint-Malo in 1944; a sketch of this work is preserved in Saint-Malo at the Museum of the History of the City and Region of Saint-Malo.

In 1861, he illustrated the book *Histoire et panorama d’un beau pays [Saint-Malo et sa région]* by Bertrand Robidou (Dinan, Librairie Bazouge).

He worked for a time at the site of the Notre-Dame de la Vieuville Abbey in Épiniac.

His work consists mainly of historically inspired genre scenes, initially in the spirit of the troubadour style; he also painted portraits.
