Artist: Eugène Verdyen (1836-1903)

A strip of land, the shade of the woods, and a sunset sky form the subject of this small painting by the artist Eugène Verdyen in his quest for the indescribable—an impression, colors, and light.

Eugène Verdyen, a painter, watercolorist, and illustrator, was born in Liège in 1836 and died in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Brussels) in 1903.
He was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and trained in Jean-François Portaels’ studio.
From 1866 until his death, Verdyen exhibited at various “Salons” in Belgium.

In 1870, Verdyen spent some time in Paris and exhibited at the “Les Apprêts” Salon.
Starting in 1874, he undertook a series of trips to Italy, Algeria, Turkey, and Austria.

Close to the “Colonie d’Anseremme” artistic collective, he later became a member of the short-lived “Cercle des aquarellistes et aquafortistes belges” (1883–1884).
From its inception, he became a member of the free drawing studio in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode

Here is what is written about him in the Dictionary of Belgian Painters:
“Independent by nature, he did not belong to any group, though he was close to the spirit of the Free Society of Fine Arts.”
A realist painter, his subjects are linked to nature and naturally draw him toward landscape art.
His light palette and his attention to light make him a precursor of Belgian Impressionism.”

Works are held in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
A retrospective of his work was organized in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in 2017.
