Monumental Enameled Sign Reading “lutterbach – Alsatian Beer” – Circa 1930–1950

Some signs tell a story.

This spectacular enamel advertising sign for the Lutterbach – Bière d'Alsace brewery undoubtedly belongs to the latter category.

Intended to adorn the facade of a café or restaurant, it immediately catches the eye with its bright yellow background, its deep blue Gothic typeface, and above all, the famous winking Alsatian woman, designed by André Stouls in 1929, which has become one of the most iconic symbols of French beer advertising.

Its monumental size is particularly rare. Signs of this size were produced in limited quantities for the most prominent establishments and are now very scarce on the market.

Remarkably, a comparable monumental Lutterbach sign, measuring 247 cm in length, is now preserved in the collections of the Écomusée d’Alsace in Ungersheim (Musée de France), attesting to the heritage value of these large advertising signs and their rarity.

Our specimen has retained an exceptional enamel luster, remarkably fresh colors, and only a few chips from wear along the edges—evidence of its authentic life on a building facade.

More than just an advertisement, this sign is now a true part of Alsace’s industrial and graphic heritage. It will naturally find its place in a collection of enamel signs, a distinctive establishment, a loft, or an interior where exceptional objects tell a story.
