Cast Iron Garden Proof - Surprised! - Henri Pernot - Art Nouveau
Henri Pernot (1859-1937)
"Surprised" - Important cast iron garden sculpture, circa 1900 -
H. 81 cm
Beautiful and large garden sculpture representing the subject "Surprised", after Henri Pernot's model. Highly decorative composition animated by two putti treated with great life: one climbs along a term topped by a mascaron, the other turns around with an expression full of mischief.
The set is richly ornamented (vine branches, decorative attributes) in a late 19th-century spirit, between naturalism and Art Nouveau. Nice contrast between the dark patina of the cast iron and the gilded parts, which set off the figures well.
Familiar model in bronze, but clearly less common in this large-format cast version, intended for garden or park ornamentation.
Condition: good overall condition, old patina, normal wear.
Henri Pernot
A sculptor active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Henri Pernot is best known for his decorative subjects and scenes with children or genre figures. His highly expressive work was often produced in bronze and used for ornamentation. He is part of this quality production intended as much for interiors as for gardens, with a true sense of movement and detail.
