A patinated spelter sculpture from around 1900 depicting a fencer, by Jean Garnier, a French sculptor born in Mouzeuil, Vendée, in 1853 and died in Paris in 1930.
Titled "Défi" (Challenge) on a brass plaque affixed to the base.
Marble base on the plinth.

Jean Garnier was born in 1853 into a modest family of carpenters. His father died before his birth, leaving his mother to raise her four children alone. Despite this difficult situation, Jean Garnier managed to cultivate his mind and dedicate himself to art. He began working in the 1880s in Paris, his style evolving over the years, influenced by various artistic movements.
Jean Garnier exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received an honorable mention in 1892.
He died in 1910 in Paris.
